A number of existing mature Norfolk Island pine trees define the park’s character and informed the spacial arrangement. The shade and protection they provide during different seasons make the space comfortable. They have been careful preserved and protected.

The parkland interfaces with the Albany Surf Club providing much needed amenity and break out spaces for events and gatherings. The popular existing playground and cafe anchor the design.

Middleton Beach is a beloved place for Albany’s community and a key tourist destination. See Design Studio were engaged to collaborate with The City of Albany to design and deliver a new public realm on the foreshore.

The site is surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the southern coast line. The design takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape.

Sweeping forms mimic the shape of the beach and intersect with rocky granite outcrops. This juxtaposition of forms drove the arrangement of the sea wall and promenade.

The project was delivered over two stages, with a 300 meter long buried local granite wall spanning the length of the site built first.

See Design Studio are proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to this beautiful and memorable place.
